Police are on the hunt for offenders who allegedly bashed a wanted man at Southport on Monday night before stealing his vehicle, later driven back to the scene and colliding with a parked car.

In a statement, Queensland Police said it received reports of a disturbance and traffic crash at Welch St, Southport, at about 9.50pm Monday.

“Officers attended the scene and located a 47-year-old man suffering bruising and a laceration to his right eye, inside a nearby address on Welch St,” the statement read.

“Further checks confirmed the man was wanted on a warrant, and officers subsequently arrested him and transported him for medical treatment.

“Investigations established a number of males attended Welch St in a 2016 Grey Mitsubishi ASX Wagon and it is alleged they stole car keys from the 47-year-old victim before assaulting him.

“The car keys were to a 2004 Porsche Cayenne SUV, then driven from the location, however, it returned a short time later and collided with a parked hire-car, a Toyota Yaris, pushing it into a power pole.

“The driver then exited the Porsche and got into the Mitsubishi, which fled north on Marine Pde.

“Police investigations are continuing to identify those involved and anyone with any information or dashcam in the area that could assist are asked to come forward.”

Nearby residents took to social media during the incident and its aftermath.

“[A] fight broke out in the street. [A] man tried to run people over with his car but smashed into rubbish bins and a parked car,” one woman said.

Her account was corroborated by others.

“[I] watched him speeding down the road into the parked car then into the power pole,” another woman said.

A third added: “It [the Porsche] was flying down the street... that car would’ve got up to at least 60–70km down the street.”
