Terrifying footage showing a Woolworths staff member being assaulted by a customer has emerged.

The vision released by Channel 9 News appears to show a person being asked to leave the Toowoomba store by a female employee, before the offender returns and repeatedly punches the staff member.

A male customer then proceeds to intervene the altercation before the offender leaves the store.

The incident occurred on Friday, February 17 at the Clifford Gardens Shopping Centre store.

It has been alleged the female offender was asked to leave for throwing cans of alcohol on the floor of the store.

A Woolworths spokeswoman said there was “no place for this kind of abusive behaviour anywhere in our community.”

“Our team members do the very best they can to help customers, and deserve to be treated with respect on the job.

“We don’t tolerate abuse in any circumstance and have taken steps to ban the customer from returning to the store.”

Police are currently investigating the incident.

Woolworths has issued support to the employee involved including counselling services.

The shocking encounter comes after a wave of crime in recent weeks, including the tragic death of Robert Brown who was attacked and killed on a street in Toowoomba earlier this month.

The Chronicle has contacted the Queensland Police Service and is awaiting a response.
