Jaclyn Symes is Victoria’s next Attorney-General, with Premier Daniel Andrews on Tuesday announcing a reshuffle to his Cabinet.

The Northern Victoria MP has been appointed after Altona MP Jill Hennessy left the ministry to spend more time with her family.

Ms Symes has a Bachelor of Laws from Deakin University and previously worked for former Deputy Premier and Attorney-General Rob Hulls before being elected in 2014.

She will pass on her agriculture and regional development portfolios to Macedon MP Mary-Anne Thomas, who will be promoted to Cabinet, and retain her position as resources minister.

As Attorney-General, one of her most pressing issues will be to handle the fallout and recommendations from the Lawyer X royal commission.

Carrum MP Sonya Kilkenny will be appointed as Cabinet Secretary, while Steve Dimopoulos, Harriet Shing and Steve McGhie will take on new responsibilities as parliamentary secretaries.

Its understood Prevention of Family Violence Minister Gabrielle Williams was among those considered for the Attorney-General role, with Public Transport Minister Ben Carroll also in contention.
