A magistrate has told a teenager he should “thank his lucky stars” he is not facing a murder charge over a near-fatal stabbing in a Prahran nightclub.
Marc Bounassif, 19, was refused bail at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Thursday after he allegedly stabbed a 31-year-old Endeavour Hills man 13 times at Revolver Upstairs on Chapel Street in the early hours of September 15.
The victim suffered life-threatening injuries and was placed in an induced coma for five days but has since been discharged from hospital.
Magistrate Brett Sonnet refused Ms Bounassif’s bid for release, but told him he should be thankful his most serious charge was intentionally causing serious injury.
“He could be sitting in the Supreme Court facing a murder charge,” he said.
“In my view, you should thank your lucky stars you’re not facing a more serious charge.”
Mr Sonnet said he knew of the nightclub — which is commonly known as “Revs” — and the notoriety of the night-life district.
“Carrying knives is prevalent, gratuitous violence between young men is prevalent,” he said.
Fresh details about the stabbing were revealed in court, including that the victim told police the confrontation began after Mr Bounassif and another man smirked as they walked past him.
Senior Constable Liam Crowley said the incident was captured on CCTV and showed a verbal altercation before the trio fell down a flight of stairs.
Mr Bounassif then allegedly attacked the victim with a knife, while a co-accused allegedly stabbed him in the side with a machete.
The pair allegedly fled via a rear entrance and used a false name to book an Uber with Mr Bounassif’s number.
Mr Bounassif was arrested three days later at his family’s Craigieburn home, with police allegedly finding ecstasy and cannabis in his room.
The victim suffered a punctured lung and a severed tendon which affected movement in his hand.
The court heard police had found a machete but not the knife allegedly used by Mr Bounassif.
Appearing via video link from custody, Mr Bounassif made love heart gestures to family members seated in court.
He is charged with intentionally causing serious injury, possessing a controlled weapon near a licensed premise, two counts of drug possession and failing to answer bail.
Mr Bounassif’s co-accused, 19-year-old Greenvale man who handed himself into police, was refused bail earlier this week.
Both will return to court at a later date.
