A dominant performance from a “Rolls Royce” midfielder has been overshadowed by a match-winning goal from a Geelong Falcon in the under-16s national championships.
Young gun Harry Morphet took a mark inside the forward 50 with the Vic Country side down by three points, went back and slotted the go-ahead goal to secure the 10.8 (68) to 8.17 (65) win in the first clash of the championships.
Morphet finished with 13 disposals at 92.3 per cent efficiency, seven contested possessions, four clearances, four score involvements, two marks, two tackles and a goal, finishing on 97 ranking points.
He was one of five Falcons juniors to get the call up to play in the Vic Country side, with Josh Lindsay, Ben Rongdit, Geordie Richardson and Giuseppe Posterino all featuring throughout the contest.
Lindsay, who was described by Falcons coach Chris Lynch as a “Rolls Royce” midfielder, collected the second-most touches for the Vic Country side with 20 disposals.
He also had nine contested possessions, which led the way for the Vic Country side, as well as five clearances, five score involvements, four tackles and two marks while going at 75 per cent efficiency.
Lindsay’s performance tallied 133 ranking points, which was the third-highest total for the game.
Rongdit also had a great game, with the athletic defender providing spectators with plenty of highlights off the half back line.
He tallied 12 disposals at 83.3 per cent efficiency, which included eight contested possessions, while also collecting nine intercept possessions.
Rongdit also laid seven tackles, took two marks and had four score involvements in the win, collecting 101 ranking points for the game.
Richardson slotted two goals in the win, being one of three Vic Country players to kick multiple goals.
He also had seven touches, two marks, and three score involvements for 64 ranking points.
Posterino had 10 touches for the game, with the small forward providing plenty of highlights throughout the contest.
He took five marks, kicked 1.2, laid two tackles and had five score involvements.
Vic Country will not play again under July 4, when the representative side will South Australia.
