A video showing shoes has gotten a man committed to the Territory’s Supreme Court.
The prosecution alleges the video ties the man to a murder in Alice Springs.
Two of the three people charged with 19-year-old Yiel ‘Yoal’ Deng Gatluak’s murder are now in the Supreme Court, with 22-year-old Guandong Lual Gatl Guandong the latest to be transferred.
Mr Guandong appeared in the Alice Springs Local Court, where Judge Tanya Fong Lim committed him after questioning the veracity of the prosecution’s evidence against him.
Prosecutor David Dalrymple said there was a video – which shows “kicking” – which allegedly links Mr Guandong to the 19-year-old’s murder.
But under questioning from Judge Fong Lim, Mr Dalrymple said the video only showed what is alleged to be Mr Guandong’s shoes.
“And there’s a description of the clothing that they’re all wearing earlier on in the Crown case,” he said.
The video was not played in court last Thursday.
Mr Guandong appeared in court via videolink and remained silent throughout the proceedings.
No plea was entered, with Judge Fong Lim determining there was enough evidence to place Mr Guandong on trial on a murder charge in the Supreme Court.
He was remanded in custody with his matter heading to the Supreme Court criminal call-over on June 18.
Mr Guandong is the second of the three charged with Mr Gatluak’s murder to be taken to trial in the Supreme Court.
Mr Gatluak’s body was found on Undooyla Rd, 10km east of Alice Springs, on January 1, 2024.
Police have previously said Mr Gatluak’s cause of death was blunt force trauma.
One of Mr Gaundong’s co-accused Koang Wuordol, 22, was committed to the Supreme Court on April 17.
In 2024, Mr Wourdol was extradited from Melbourne to Alice Springs after he was charged with Mr Gatluak’s murder.
He is yet to enter a plea.
The third co-accused in the murder case, a 17-year-old who cannot be named for legal reasons, still has their matter in the Local Court.
All three have been charged with murder, with the boy’s matter back before the court on June 12.
Previously, the Local Court heard a “significant amount” of evidence – 18 gigabytes – has been tendered in the case, which includes video, photo exhibits, and forensic material.
Mr Wourdol’s matter will be mentioned at a June 4 Supreme Court criminal call-over in Alice Springs.
