Tributes flow for 78-year-old killed in Calvert crash

A 78-year-old man who died in a crash near the NT and QLD border is being remembered by loved ones. Read the heartfelt tributes.

THE man killed in a two-vehicle crash on the NT and QLD border is being remembered as a loving father and grandfather.

Michael Krecic, 78, from Wallangarra in QLD died on Savannah Way at Calvert on August 4 after a crash with another vehicle.

NT Police confirmed the driver of the other vehicle was not injured and investigations into the incident were continuing.

Mr Krecic’s daughter Kimberly currently lives in Greece so was out of the country when she learned the heartbreaking news.

She initially said she hadn’t received much information but had since been filled in by family.

Ms Krecic paid tribute to her father, who she said “died doing what he loved”.

“My father loved the great outdoors of Australia and exploring what the wild side this country had to offer,” she said.

“He was always in his element hunting, fossicking, fishing, four-by-four driving up every mountain, valley, and state.

He leaves behind five children, 11 grandchildren, three great grandchildren and a loving brother.

“My brother loved life and the outdoors and he loved adventure,” his brother John wrote.

“No one willever know the relationship that we had in our short life which is one of the best things.”

Comments on social media from family and friends also shared their condolences and shock at the news.

“RIP Uncle Mike. My heart goes out to my dad, his brother, and the whole family too,” Leanne Everingham said.

“It’s just so surreal, words can’t describe how sad this news has been.”

Mr Krecic’s funeral will be held in Stanthorpe next Wednesday.

Mr Krecic’s death brought the Northern Territory’s road toll at the time to 34.

It now stands at 36, following a double fatality in Tennant Creek last week, which involved the death of another Queensland resident Gabrielle Soltan.
