Multi day celebrations will take over the city this year to commemorate the 80th anniversary since the Allies gleaned victory in the Pacific.

On August 15, 1945, three months after Nazi Germany had surrendered, Japan announced they would also wave the white flag, marking the end of the Second World War.

Acting Mayor Ann-Maree Greaney said commemorations would rival those of previous years and serve as a reminder of Townsville’s pivotal role in the world war.

“It is a celebration like no other, where our proud community comes out in force to not only honour the end of Australia’s participation in the Second World War, but remember and acknowledge the sacrifices of our defence so that we can be here today,” Ms Greaney said.

The weekend long festivities will run from Friday August 15 to Sunday 17 and include a commemorative service, historical re-enactments, a community open day and a parade along The Strand which will include a sky salute.

Commander 3rd Brigade, Brigadier Ben McLennan said the occasion was a reminder of how the Australian Defence Force, coalition and Townsville community came together in a time of need.

“What happened here in Townsville during WWII exemplifies our resolute will and stoic fortitude to fight back and win,” Brigadier McLennan said.

“VP80 also reminds us that our great Garrison city was forged during WWII and reminds us of our obligation to be ready to do the same as our forebears, if the need arises.”

Commanding Officer 27 Squadron, Wing Commander Luke Headley recognised the allied aviators who were critical in ending the devastating conflict.

“That proud story of determination, endurance and sacrifice will feature prominently at the refurbished RAAF Townsville Aviation Heritage Centre when it reopens to the public during the celebrations in August,” he said.
