Townsville residents are expected to get slightly chilly tonight as the minimum temperature drops below 20 degrees.
This comes after a hotter than average March and April according to the Bureau of Meteorology statistics.
Senior climatologist Hugh McDowell said that cooler air meant more comfortable nights and lower temperatures on the way, much to the relief of those feeling the heat of summer.
“Cooler conditions are starting to come through meaning some less hot and sticky nights for Townsville residents,” he said.
“We are seeing cooler temperatures at the moment, but this will climb again at the end of the week and into next week but then looking to cool down after that, giving a bit of relief.”
“As we go through winter there is a strong signal that we will see above average temperatures, so still expect it to be warmer than normal for the next few months.”
Mr McDowell said that tropical parts of Queensland also recorded average to above average rainfall. Townsville Airport recorded a March average maximum temperature of 31.6 degrees and an average low of 24.4 degrees.
The 2023/2024 summer was Australia’s third-warmest on record marked by persistent, widespread heat with many areas experiencing heatwaves. It was also the third-highest summer rainfall total during an El Nino.
