A Townsville rugby league club is making waves both on and off the field with their latest act of generosity, a heartfelt donation to the paediatric ward at Townsville University Hospital.

The Chiefs rugby league team is making waves both on and off the field with their latest act of generosity, a heartfelt donation to the paediatric ward at Townsville University Hospital.

Team member Tane Hutana shed light on the motivation behind the club’s latest charitable endeavour, explaining their decision to donate three televisions stemmed from a deep connection with the hospital and its patients.

“We have lots of communication with Townsville University Hospital as to what would be best suited for them and their patients,” Mr Hutana said.

“(The televisions) was one idea that came up, we’ve had kids go through that emergency ward so it hit home for a few of us.”

Mr Hutana, along with fellow Chiefs teammate Jarrod Francis, personally delivered the donated televisions to the ward.

The funds for donation were raised through meat tray raffles held at The Stuart Hotel.

Acknowledging the importance of entertainment for young patients, Mr Hutana emphasised the impact of having TVs in hospital rooms.

“It’s obviously a good distraction for patients in there, have some Bluey on in the background to distract them from what’s going on,” he said.

The hospital staff’s reaction to the donation was overwhelmingly positive.

“They were really taken aback by it,” Mr Hutana said.

“They really loved the idea and acknowledged us helping out that way. We get our satisfaction from helping out in the community.”

Mr Hutana also revealed that the team had donated children’s furniture, such as TVs and wall wrapping, and that it would be installed in the play area at the hospital’s Palliative Care unit within the next two months.

The Chiefs are a Townsville rugby league team made up of prison officers.
