There’s still time to register for Run Army and support those who serve in uniform – either the Australian Army, the Fire and Ambulance Service or the Queensland Police.
The annual event on Sunday April 21 is open for anyone who can walk or run at least 5km and participants can take part in the physical events in Townsville or Brisbane or the virtual event anywhere in the world.
But Commander Third Brigade Brigadier Dave McCammon said there was no better place in the world to put on your running shoes and support the event then right here in the garrison city of Townsville.
“Townsville is the only city outside of Brisbane that runs its own event and that’s reflective of the number of service personnel in the city,” he said.
“It’s also reflective of the number of veterans who retire into this city but it’s also very reflective of the great support that we get from the community.
“I see Run Army as not an army event but an opportunity for army to get out and get involved with the community and for everyone that’s out there.
“It’s a great opportunity to get active, get together with a group of friends. You don’t have to run the 10k, you don’t have to run the 5k, if your goal is to walk the 5k.
“Get, get your dog, get you friends and walk the 5k and enjoy yourself and enjoy the community and enjoy the great community that Townsville is and it’s on one of the most beautiful running tracks in Australia along the Strand.”
He said the support for the event so far had been amazing with more than 1000 registrations so far and they were hoping to crack 2000.
“It was great to see the local member Phil Thompson online and he’s picked his goal, he’s going to run the 5k.
“He’s asked veterans to come out and run that with him. So what a great opportunity for people who haven’t been active in a while to pick a goal and be active in this community.
“Come down, get involved. When you enrol you not only get entry, you get the limited edition t-shirt, and on completion, you’ll get a Run Army medal.”
Money raised from the event goes to support Legacy, the Queensland Ambulance Service Legacy Scheme, Queensland Police Legacy and the Firefighters Cancer Foundation.
