Two of the nations best cowboys will be running a free rodeo clinic this year, as organisers look to attract raw talent for their Mount Isa Mines Indigenous Rodeo Championships.
The clinic is slated to run on August 7, at the Mount Isa Campdraft Grounds, and will be run by Kalkadoon cowboy Donovan Rutherford, PBR rookie champion Jake Curr, and six-time Australian champion protection athlete Darryl ‘Chongy’ Chong.
The free all-day event is open to all Indigenous adults and juniors (14-17yrs) with an interest in learning the ropes.
Together, Donovan, Jake and Chongy will lead riders through the fundamentals of rodeo — from skills and safety to confidence and connection — helping to build not just talent, but a stronger, more inclusive future for the sport.
Mount Isa Rodeo community board chair Mark ‘Tommo’ Thompson said he hopes Indigenous riders from across the country will nominate and make the journey to ‘Isa.
“To see the level of skill, commitment and interest from our Indigenous riders — particularly the young guns coming up through the ranks — shows this sport is in great hands,” he said.
