Townsville University Hospital has celebrated National Palliative Care Week with it’s workers and volunteers

Townsville University Hospital has hosted an event to recognise the hard work of palliative care workers and volunteers.

Their work may often go unnoticed by the wider community, but never by those experiencing some of their toughest moments.

Palliative care workers and volunteers have been celebrated at Townsville University Hospital during National Palliative Care Week.

The Palliative Care Centre in Townsville hosted a barbeque for the workers, volunteers and patients to celebrate the week and shed light on the care.

Townsville Palliative Care Centre nurse unit manager Aaron Hanson said it’s important to acknowledge the hard-working staff who give their all.

“The work our staff does can be physically and emotionally taxing, so taking the time to acknowledge the efforts of our staff is crucial,” She said.

“The week also helps raise awareness of the vital role palliative care plays in healthcare and share the heartfelt moments that often take place here.”

Townsville Palliative Care Centre’s Christine Krompic volunteers as a gardener, and said palliative care and making patients feel more at home is incredibly important to her.

“It’s the small things that can make a big difference for people in a hospital setting,” she said.

“I love creating a peaceful, calming environment for patients and their families by maintaining and growing the gardens.”

Volunteer Lance Denman said palliative care working is “one of the most rewarding things” a person can do.

“To anyone considering getting involved in palliative care as a volunteer, I would say get out and do it,” he said.
