Townsville rider killed after utility and two motorcycles collide
Police are investigating a shocking crash that claimed the life of a BMW motorcycle rider and left another in a life-threatening condition in Townsville.
The rider of a BMW motorcycle has died and his passenger seriously injured in a crash in Townsville which also saw another rider taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Police said that around 6.08pm, a white Mazda utility has collided with a silver BMW motorcycle and an orange CFMOTO motorcycle just after the roundabout of Mount Low Parkway and Lionel Turner Drive in Bushland Beach.
The BMW rider, a 76-year-old South Townsville man, was treated by emergency services but died at the scene.
The BMW passenger, a 70-year-old South Townsville woman suffered significant pelvic and leg injuries and was taken to Townsville University Hospital in a potentially life-threatening condition. She is now stable.
The CFMOTO rider, a 22-year-old Aitkenvale man, was taken to Townsville University Hospital after suffering soft tissue injuries.
The utility driver, a 28-year-old Mount Low man, was not injured and is assisting police with their inquiries.
Officers are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident or who has relevant dashcam footage to contact police.
Mount Low Parkway was closed at the time and motorists advised to avoid the area.
Earlier, Acting Senior Sergeant Terry Phillips confirmed that the accident scene was “confronting”, saying two patients had been taken to hospital.
“The cause of the accident is unknown at this stage and police will be investigating that matter,” he said at the scene of the accident.
“It is confronting for everyone but our officers do a great job with their professionalism and investigating the matter.”
“The work goes on from here, so they’ll be mapping the scene and looking at all parts of the road,” he said.
“We were fortunate that we had our road police scene, our general duties and tactical crime unit and all officers available to come out to this.”
Sen Sgt Phillips also confirmed that the witnesses to the horrific accident had attempted to render help.
“The locals did come in and assist, providing initial first aid where they could,” he said.
“Especially in a community like this where we have a skate park and young children walking around, just to mind your speed and your manner of driving.”
Four QAS crews initially responded to the scene.
The Forensic Crash Unit investigation is continuing.
