Zac Wells faces a long and painful road to recovery after he was crushed in a horror workplace incident in the weeks before Christmas.

The 35-year-old Toowoomba man and St Mary’s College Old Boy was working on a section of the Warrego Highway at Roma when he was partially crushed by a reversing road roller on December 11.

The incident left him with more than 20 fractures and several deep burns caused by hot tar that had been poured on the road surface.

Mr Wells was flown to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital where he was placed in an induced coma and endured seven surgeries and dozens of skin grafts.

The injuries mean it will be years before Mr Wells is able to work again so his sister Holly Hamel has reached out for help.

She launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for Mr Wells and his wife Heidi.

“Zac is very lucky to be alive,” she said.

“We are so proud of Zac for the strength and resilience he has shown through the past six weeks and now he faces a very lengthy rehabilitation in Brisbane to learn how to walk again.”

Ms Hamel said her sister-in-law had temporarily closed her business to care for Mr Wells.

“Heidi is self-employed and operates her own salon solely,” she said.

“As we know bills don’t stop and I am hoping this can take some financial stress off them both so they will be able to be together and support each other at this very difficult time.”

The GoFundMe campaign attracted about $5000 within 24 hours.
