Temperatures dropped on Sunday as Toowoomba and parts of the Darling Downs recorded the coldest March day on record.
Umbrellas and rain jackets were dusted off as a thick cloud band covered southeast Queensland and brought drizzle and patches of light rain to the Toowoomba region, which is expected to hover around for the rest of the week.
With big umbrellas and long-sleeved dresses, finance broker Christine James and admin worker Dana Sanders waited at the Margaret St and Ruthven St lights on their way to lunch on Monday.
“Perfect weather for chips and gravy,” Ms Sanders said.
Ms James said she spent yesterday at home in an oodie.
Temperatures struggled to reach above 18C, with a high of 17.7C making the day the coldest day recorded in the last 28 years, BOM senior forecaster Felim Hanniffy said.
Toowoomba residents are encouraged to keep their wet weather gear handy as the band of cloud continues to hang over the Garden City til Friday, keeping the temperature in the high teens to low 20s with persistent rain, he said.
The cloud cover is expected to stick around for the rest of the week, with the northern parts of Toowoomba possibly receiving between 20-30mm in rainfall and southern parts less than 10mm, he said.
On Friday the clouds are expected to break up before the weekend, but will be heralded in with a “blustery” south-easterly wind, he said.
Umbrellas, gumboots and rain jackets will likely need to be swapped for a wind jacket over the weekend, as drier conditions will be accompanied by brisk winds expected to reach around 20km/h.
The temperature is expected to remain cool the whole weekend, getting chilly overnight, he said.
