Nearly 50 properties across the Toowoomba region face being sold at auction later this year due to unpaid council rates worth more than $670,000.

The Toowoomba Regional Council has released its annual list of the land parcels that have outstanding rates and charges dating back three years or more.

The list of 47 properties are featured across 27 suburbs and localities, with an average owing amount of $14,290.

Most of the sites on the list had outstanding rates worth more than $10,000, while there were seven properties owing more than $20,000 each.

Council rates and revenue principal Shayne Morris’s report to councillors at Tuesday’s committee meeting, where it was endorsed unanimously, said the threat of sale at the end of the year was the best deterrent against continued derelict rates bills.

“The pursuit of the outstanding rates or charges within the legislative framework is a demonstration of responsible financial management and the promotion of equitable treatment of all ratepayers across the region,” the report said.

“Council’s rate arrears position as at June 30 each year is generally less than five per cent.

“The recovery of overdue rates or charges is a priority and there is evidence that council’s collection strategies are achieving the desired outcome.”

Residents and property owners will be given plenty of opportunities to pay the outstanding amounts, with no auction to be held before November under the current council policy.

In 2024, the same list featured 58 properties owing $1.17m.
