Tambrey Lee Morris trafficked drugs on streets of Toowoomba over six-month period

A 31-year-old mother of five has taken significant steps to self rehabilitation in jail after being charged with drug trafficking in Toowoomba, a court has heard.

Australia's growing drug crisis

A 31-year-old mother of five’s commitment to self rehabilitation to get away from drug use has saved her from being returned to jail.

Tambrey Lee Morris appeared before Toowoomba Supreme Court on Friday to plead guilty to trafficking drugs in Toowoomba between January 25, 2022, and July 13, 2022.

Crown prosecutor Nicole Friedewald told the court Morris primarily dealt in meth and cannabis but she had also trafficked other illicit substances to a customer base of at least 42 people, 31 of whom were regular buyers.

Morris had sold meth in amounts from 0.1g to a “half ball” of 1.75g and cannabis from 1g to 28g and at times she had also used a “drug runner”, she said.

Morris had continued trafficking drugs despite being placed on probation in the magistrates court in March 2022 for possessing small amounts of meth and cannabis, Ms Friedewald said.

Her trafficking came to a halt on July 25, 2022, when police executed a search warrant at her home and found drugs, drug utensils and cash, she said.

She had co-operated by providing police with her mobile phone PIN which led police to the trafficking activity, she said.

Morris was charged and taken into custody and spent 141 days in jail before securing Supreme Court bail, the court heard.

Her barrister Jessica Goldie told the court while in custody Morris had done a number of courses to better herself and upon her release had engaged with drug counselling and a Sunrise Way drug rehabilitation program.

Ms Goldie said at the time of trafficking her client had been using drugs but provided the results of three drug tests taken recently in which Morris had tested negative to drugs.

Judge Susan Brown acknowledged Morris’s “significant” efforts toward rehabilitation and accepted she was remorseful and remarked it appeared her time in custody had been a “wake up call” for her.

“There is no doubt in my mind not withstanding your rehabilitation, which is significant, you have to be supervised in the community,” she told Morris.

Taking into account the 141 days of pre-sentence custody, Judge Brown sentenced Morris to three years in jail but ordered she be released immediately on parole.
