Police issue $4135 fine to daughter who helped get mum into Queensland

Police have revealed how a NSW woman managed to sneak into Queensland days after she was found in the boot of a car and kicked back across the borders

Border crosser arrested in Darling Downs home

The daughter of a New South Wales woman caught sneaking across the border in a car boot has been slapped with a $4135 fine for her role in the incident.

Police found a 49-year-old NSW mum bundled in blankets and pillows in the boot of a car that was towed across the border at Goondiwindi on August 18 about 3.30pm.

The mum was hit with a $4135 for failing to comply with a public health direction from the chief health officer and taken back into NSW.

The Chronicle can reveal that the woman arranged for her 34-year-old daughter to meet her in Yelarbon - a small border town 51km east of Goondiwindi - after she had walked across the border at an undisclosed location, about 10pm that same night.

The pair travelled to the daughter’s Dragon Street home in Warwick where the mother barricaded herself, hanging sheets across the windows to avoid detection.

This failed when Warwick police received a tip-off that the mum was in town.

They attended the address on August 27 and charged the mum with failing to comply with a public health direction.

She was held in custody to appear before the Warwick Magistrates Court on the same day.

The woman pleaded guilty and was fined $4135 and ordered into mandatory hotel quarantine at a cost of about $3200.

Darling Downs City Patrol Group Inspector Paul James said police also took the daughter into custody and uncovered bank receipts and text messages that revealed her role in the offence.

It was further revealed that both the mum and daughter had attempted to cross into Queensland from NSW at Goondiwindi on August 12 but were both refused entry.

Insp Paul James said the daughter admitted to police that she crossed the border a few hours after she was refused entry.

The daughter has been hit with a $4135 fine for failing to comply with a public health direction, however she was not required to enter hotel quarantine.
