Major update in case of Toowoomba restaurant owner Ramadan El Attar accused of assault

A Toowoomba magistrate received an update on the court case of a popular restaurant owner accused of assaulting two men, and threatening to kill a third.

A Toowoomba magistrate received an update on the court case of a popular restaurant owner charged with a number of serious charges.

In February, police alleged Ramadan Mohamed Hamed ah El Attar assaulted two men, and threatened to kill a third.

However, when the international chef had his case mentioned on Thursday, July 20, the court heard police may alter an assault charge.

Mr El Attar’s legal team told the court, a submission was sent to police regarding the charges, and the assault charge in particular.

Police prosecutor Alister Windsor said police received the submission a day prior to the court sitting.

The sergeant said there may be “common ground” between police and Mr El Attar’s legal team, and there was a prospect for the lawyer’s submission “to be resolved”.

As of July 20, Mr El Attar was charged with two counts of public nuisance and threatening violence via the discharge of a firearm, and one charge of common assault, deprivation of liberty, and using a carriage service to send a death threat.

The El Attar Middle Middle Eastern Grill restaurant owner told the court early in the year, he planned to contest the charges.

Mr El Attar did not appear in court, and his bail was enlarged.

The case will be next before the court on August 10.
