Two Darling Downs police officers have recounted the moment they were called for backup to the deadly ambush that shocked the country.

Goondiwindi Constable Katie Lansbury and Warwick Senior Constable Ian Buckmaster were tasked to attend a Wieambilla property on Monday afternoon after two police officers and a concerned neighbour were brutally murdered.

Constable Buckmaster said he was in disbelief when the news first came through.

“It’s not something that happens in Australia,” he said.

“The more that came out as the job went on (it became clear) how horrific (it was) for the police who were there at the time.”

Constable Buckmaster said as the hours ticked on, more police were travelling from all over to assist.

“(They were coming) to do whatever they needed to do,” he said.

“We don't know where they were coming from … everybody just wants to help.”

About 4.30pm Monday, Constables Matthew Arnold, Rachel McCrow, Keely Brough and Randall Kirk arrived at the property to conduct a routine missing person’s check on Nathaniel Train.

The Wieambilla acreage was owned by Nathaniel’s brother Gareth and his wife Stacey Train, who was also the former wife of Nathaniel.

As the officers approached the home, the Train trio opened fire from the bushes, killing Constables Arnold and McCrow.

Constable Kirk fled in a police car after being shot in the leg and Constable Brough fled into the bush before being pursued by the Trains, who shot into the trees and lit fires to try to flush her out.

Alan Dare, a concerned neighbour who approached the property after hearing shots and seeing the dark smoke, was shot in the back and killed by the assailants.

The Train trio were killed by specialist police late on Monday night during a firefight between the shooters and officers.

Constable Lansbury has only been in the job six months and said Constable Brough was in the intake of recruits after her.

Constables Lansbury and Buckmaster have stayed in Chinchilla to assist in the aftermath, saying they had seen incredible things in the small town.

“Wherever we go, people are sending their condolences,” Sen Con Buckmaster said.

“I was in Woolworths the other night and a man came up, and he was all teary and so apologetic for what happened, saying it’s not Chinchilla.”

Hundreds of people gathered at Illoura Village, Chinchilla on Friday night to pay their respects, lay flowers and light candles for the three murdered victims, including a visibly shaken Constable Brough.
