A 51-year-old Dalby man will see in the New Year from a jail cell after he was refused bail on assault and domestic violence charges.
Anthony Alan Ramsey appeared in custody before Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Friday, December 29, on one count of assault occasioning bodily harm, four counts of breaching a domestic violence order and one of contravening a police direction.
Mr Ramsey protested his innocence from the court dock, saying the domestic violence order had been changed so he could have contact with his partner and that she had invited him to the caravan in which she was staying at a camp site outside of Dalby.
After interjecting repeatedly, Magistrate Kay Ryan warned him to be quiet or she would have Mr Ramsey removed from the court.
Defence lawyer Hamish Chapman said his client conceded there had been a scuffle with his partner inside the caravan but he claimed he was the victim and he had been stabbed in the hand with a syringe.
Mr Chapman said there appeared to be some confusion as to the court order.
However, police prosecutor Sergeant Chris Hutchins, appearing via video link from Dalby, said Mr Ramsey had been before the Dalby Magistrates Court on December 12 when the order was varied to include a “no contact” order with the aggrieved woman, submitting there should have been no confusion.
Sgt Hutchins objected to bail citing Mr Ramsey’s criminal history which included previous assaults, breaches of domestic violence orders and bail conditions.
Magistrate Kay Ryan refused bail and remanded Mr Ramsey in custody to appear via video link from the prison when next the charges are mentioned before the Dalby Magistrates Court on January 9.
