A young Toowoomba man accused of being involved in stealing a car and breaking into homes has been released from custody.
Bevan Costello, 19, applied for bail before the Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Thursday, June 19, on three charges of breaking into homes and committing crimes and one charge of unlawful use of a vehicle.
The court heard the alleged offences occurred between June 8 and June 12, and police objected to Costello’s bail application, fearing he would continue to commit alleged property crimes.
Magistrate Mark Howden said if it wasn’t for a positive report from Mr Costello’s parole officer, he wouldn’t have granted Mr Costello’s bail application, noting he seemed to have relapsed into drug use following the death of his baby.
“The funeral for that child is yet to take place,” he said.
Mr Howden said during the alleged serious offending, valuable medals were stolen from a property.
“You need to be under no illusions,” he warned Mr Costello.
“(If) you resort to this sort of (alleged behaviour) again and you come back before me Mr Costello, then you will remain in custody for a considerable period of time.”
Mr Costello promised the magistrate he would not come back before the court on fresh charges.
Upon his release, Mr Costello was put on strict conditions, which included having to wear an ankle monitoring device.
He has to report to the police three times a week and has a curfew in place.
