A court has been told new details about how a Toowoomba woman was allegedly subjected to a number of chilling and violent acts of domestic violence at the hands of Joshua Robert Mills.

The construction business owner and auxiliary firefighter applied for bail at Toowoomba Magistrate Court on Tuesday, July 4.

His bail was again refused, when a second magistrate found he posed a high risk of reoffending, a clear disregard for court orders, and also that his circumstances had not changed enough to warrant a successful application.

Mr Mills was arrested in March after breaching his bail, and was remanded in custody on a number of domestic violence charges including assault causing harm to the woman’s body, choking, stalking, and the dangerous operation of a vehicle.

The court was told Mr Mills allegedly assaulted the woman when she came home from a work party.

Police prosecutor Anita Page said police allege he was verbally abusive before throwing her to the floor, pinning her down with his knee on her chest.

Ms Page said Mr Mills then allegedly strangled her while she attempted to fight him off.

The woman told police she thought she was going to die.

On another occasion, Ms Page said Mr Mills grabbed her by the hair and threw her into a fridge with such force that the metal was dented.

Police also allege Mr Mills fought with the woman while picking up his son from school in March, which resulted in an alleged car chase, where Mr Mills followed the woman through a red light, before purposefully crashing into her.

The woman is not the boy’s mother.

Representing himself, the 33-year-old told the court he did not, and would never harm the woman, who he planned to marry before he found out she was allegedly unfaithful, however he did admit to putting a tracking device in her car while on bail.

When speaking to the court, Mr Mills told the court for the past 10 years he had been a trusted member of the community through his work as an auxiliary firefighter, and noted his business was impacted by his time in custody.

Ms Page opposed the bail application, saying that police had strong evidence and a prima facie case against Mr Mills.

Ms Philipson ordered the arresting officer to supply outstanding evidence to the prosecution and Mr Mill’s legal team by July 24, or the officer was to attend Mr Mill’s next court sitting on July 25, and explain why there was a delay.
