A man allegedly under the influence of cocaine when he drove into the path of an oncoming bus on the way to celebrate his birthday isn’t responsible for the death of two young women, a court has heard.
Seth Adrian Rigney, of Wasleys, appeared in the Adelaide Magistrate Court on Tuesday where he pleaded not guilty to two counts of cause death by dangerous driving and one count of cause harm by dangerous driving.
Instead, Mr Rigney, 23, pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of three counts of aggravated driving without due care – which was accepted by the prosecution.
Emergency services were called to the intersection of Mallala Rd and Navvy Hill Rd, in Korunye, about 7.15am on February 2 last year after reports a Fuso bus and Ford sedan had collided.
Mr Rigney’s girlfriend – Chloe Glasson, 23, from Elizabeth North – was sitting in the front passenger seat and died at the scene, while another passenger, Shakeena Abdulla, 19, died four days later in hospital.
Court documents released to The Advertiser last year alleged an SA Ambulance member – who treated Mr Rigney after the crash – told police the accused had stated he took cocaine “either the night previously or earlier that morning”.
The documents further alleged that during Major Crash’s investigation of the scene, a Tommy Hilfiger-branded carry bag “containing cocaine” was found among the belongings of the ford sedan’s passengers.
On Tuesday, Magistrate Justin Wickens adjourned the matter to the District Court in May.
Mr Rigney was remanded on continuing bail.
