Woman flees scene of fatal multi-car crash on Port River Expressway

A woman died and three other people were hurt in a multi-vehicle smash on the Port River Expressway, where a charged driver ran from the carnage before being arrested.

A woman has died and three other people have been taken to hospital following a horror crash at Gillman last night.

Just after 9.35pm on Tuesday, emergency services responded to reports of a five-car smash on the Port River Expressway.

The passenger of a red Toyota Prius, a 26-year-old woman from North Haven, died at the scene.

The driver of the Prius, a 26-year-old woman also from North Haven and another passenger, a 29-year-old man from Seaford were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Witnesses say the driver of a Holden Cruze involved in the incident ran from her vehicle.

Officers tracked down the 38-year-old woman from Port Adelaide and charged her with causing death by dangerous driving, three counts of causing serious harm by dangerous driving, aggravated due care, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to exchange details after an accident and resisting police.

She has been refused bail and will appear in the Port Adelaide Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

The Port River Expressway was closed in both directions between Eastern Parade and Hanson Road while Major Crash Investigators examined the scene.

The road has since reopened to all traffic.

The woman’s death is the 59th life lost on SA roads this year, compared to 83 at the same time last year.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or who has dashcam footage is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Meanwhile, in the southern suburbs, motorists are asked to seek an alternate route after a multi-car collision forced the closure of southbound lanes on the Southern Expressway.
