The Salisbury Aquatic Centre’s “state-of-the-art” $29.9m facelift is well underway with construction of the new 10-metre-high water slide tower and kids’ waterpark nearing completion.
Salisbury Council has revealed ongoing construction of the centre is progressing after the popular pool was closed over summer, alongside new artist impressions showing the dedicated kids’ waterpark and slides.
The water slide resembles beloved children’s game Mouse Trap, with its colourful slides and tubes drawing inspiration from the native Rosella bird.
The council said the “highly anticipated” new features were taking shape, with an opening date ready for the middle of 2024.
“The park will feature fountains and other splash play features for the young members of the community to enjoy,” the council said.
“Other key building services including, electrical, lighting, airconditioning, internal wall and ceiling lining work, has been successfully completed in the state-of-the-art fitness gym and contemporary change rooms.
“The gym will have all the latest modern features, and has been designed to overlook the outdoor pools and grass area for natural light and an open space view.”
Over the coming months work will continue on the new tennis club rooms, new carpark and other road resurfacing.
The Aquatic Centre’s redevelopment was jointly funded by the council and state government.
Tourism Minister Zoe Bettison said she was delighted to see construction now in its final stages. She said the centre had been a community hub for decades “fostering and building strong connections in the heart of Salisbury”.
In December last year, the council announced the development had reached the lockup stage and the main building was now secure.
A photo showing the progress on the internal fit outs was posted alongside the caption explaining the multiple pool shells were finished and tiling works had begun.
“Additionally, the concrete shell for the new outdoor 50-metre pool has been finalised and is currently undergoing thorough quality testing to meet the highest standards,” the post read.
“To ensure top-notch water quality for the new aquatic elements, a state-of-the-art and water-efficient filtration system has been installed.”
The post described the Salisbury Aquatic Centre as “the best place in the northern suburbs to enjoy water activity.”
“With not only the outdoor pool and waterpark features, but also indoor heated pools equipped with ramps for wheelchair access, this aquatic centre will cater for year-round swimming and leisure.”
Salisbury Council deputy mayor Chad Buchanan has previously told The Advertiser people would be able to enjoy the new facilities from May this year.
Expressions of interest in membership and swim programs are now open on the Salisbury Aquatic Centre’s website.
