A popular swimming centre in the northern suburbs will be closed over the year’s hottest months, but construction of a brand new, state-of-the-art facility is “well and truly on track for completion” before the following summer, a top councillor said.
The new Salisbury Aquatic Centre is set to open its doors in mid 2024, and will provide water-lovers in the northern suburbs with an Olympic sized swimming pool as well as water slides and a gym.
Salisbury Council deputy mayor Chad Buchanan told The Advertiser while the pool is closed for its facelift over summer, residents will be able to enjoy the new Olympic sized outdoor pool and 25m indoor pool from May next year, with construction currently on track.
“As well as the pools, there will be a small rehab therapy-like pool, as well as a kids’ splash area,” Mr Buchanan said.
“It’s well and truly on track for completion next year, but obviously a development like this doesn’t happen overnight.
“It’s at the same site that the old pool was in, meaning that facility isn’t available over summer. The old pool had been there for around 50-60 years, so it was time for something new.”
The new centre will also house a cafe and a gym, with the addition of picnic spaces with barbecues on the perimeter of the building.
At the end of August, Mr Buchanan shared a post to a local community Facebook page showing the roof of the new development that had been installed in the “one-stop location for all your swimming needs”.
The outdoor 50m pool will be available for use eight months of the year, with the indoor pool open year-round.
A $7 million grant from the state government combined with $23 million in council funding to pay for the “much-needed” development.
In the meantime, northern suburbs residents who need to cool off in the coming months can still head to the nearby AquaDome in Elizabeth, or head to the North Adelaide Aquatic Centre.
