Roll with the best: Adelaide’s best sandwiches with our five to try

From gourmet to old-school classic, the humble sandwich can make lunch legendary. Here’s five to try this week when you get sick of the Easter chocolate.

Would you pay $24 for this bug sandwich?

Hankering for an old-school sandwich at a nice price? This classic deli in the CBD, which has been run by Mario and Kathy Cavuoto for more than 25 years, is the place to go – if you don’t mind a bit of a line up on weekdays. The bread is always fresh, as are the generous fillings.

You can take your pick from the extensive blackboard menu – where the No. 13 with turkey, cranberry and avocado is a popular choice – or create your own tasty combo. The super salad plus ham on a double cut roll is also a house specialty.

Yore

Yore is so much more than a sandwich shop – open seven days a week. Previously known as Valley of Yore, it is also a bulk organic grocer open until 3pm. Coffee is available from 6.30am and sangers between 10am and 2pm. The summer menu includes the No. 1 which has pickled zucchini, whipped ricotta, prosciutto and balsamic glaze and the No. 4 with Yore tuna mix, caper mayo, cos and cucumber. You can add chilli honey or a drizzle of chilli oil to your sanger and if you don’t want bread, Yore’s friendly staff are happy to make you a salad out of one of the fillings.

Rodeo

Less is more at this tiny cafe where there are – at last count – just six options on the permanent sandwich menu which features locally sourced ingredients. There’s the Rodeo Reuben, with pickled cabbage that’s been made from scratch on the premises and the RFC, short for Rodeo Fried Chicken, which has a jalapeno-brined chook between thick slices of sourdough. And if it’s not your first rodeo at gourmet sandwich-making and you want to try to re-create the Rodeo taste, you can also buy SA-made Nice Pickles and loaves of sourdough to take home.

Housed in Adelaide Central Market’s western mall, Lucia’s – like the market – is world famous. Its sandwiches – panini – are made from crusty rolls smeared with olive oil with filling combos such as the No. 4 with tuna, preserved lemon, aioli, tomato and chilli and the No. 7 in-house basil pesto, smoked mozzarella, tomato, artichoke and eggplant. Or you can keep it simply delicious with the No. 1, with prosciutto, mozzarella, fresh tomatoes and basil.

In a hurry? Open Tuesday to Saturday, Don’s Deli is all about the grab-and-go sando. Well, almost because there are stools and crates outside – where furry friends are welcome – for those who fancy an al fresco-style sandwich dining experience. The Italian-inspired menu includes focaccias and toasties – with fillings such as mortadella and pesto and blueberry and maple bacon. And should you be in charge of the team-meeting snacks or lunch for family and friends, Don’s Deli also does catering at $15 per person for a minimum of 10 people, with the option of pick-up or delivery.
