Oliver Brown from The Big Easy Group, reveals why they are closing House of George and new plans for the East End location

The group behind one of Adelaide’s hottest CBD restaurants has revealed the unexpected reason they’re closing and what’s taking its place next month.

• House of George will officially shut

The powerhouse hospitality group behind CBD restaurant House of George has revealed why they are closing down the venue – and announced plans to relaunch the space next month.

On Monday, The Big Easy Group confirmed the city dining favourite was shutting its doors for good on June 9 after six years at the East Tce location.

But Oliver Brown, the company’s managing director, said they will re-open the venue a fortnight later, with an exciting new concept that will be unique to Adelaide.

“We’ve been planning this move for months, not to close a venue, but to bring a new idea to life,” he said.

Mr Brown described the refreshed eatery as their modern take on the “classic, white tablecloth” restaurant and would be a “fun yet refined” addition to their stable of businesses.

“We’re really pumped, we think it’s going to be a different and unique venue for Adelaide,” he said.

“It’s more in line with the style of venues that we’re loving at the moment. It’s an ode to old-school hospitality.”

Mr Brown admitted House of George had not been The Big Easy Group’s “best performing site” in recent times, and said dining habits had changed since the pandemic.

“Pre-Covid, it was all about big, hearty share plates in the middle, family meal vibes,” Mr Brown said.

“Now people are looking for more experience-based dining... somewhere that you can go for a meal and you can be anywhere in the world.”

Their portfolio of venues include Prospect Rd hotspots Anchovy Bandit and Bottega Bandito, and French restaurant La Louisiane in the city.

Before their final service on June 9, House of George will rotate their “greatest hits” menu items, offer free ouzo shots all weekend on May 24 and 25, along with “a few extra surprises”

The space will receive a “facelift” before reopening about a fortnight later.
