Footage has emerged of the good Samaritan who intervened to stop the alleged assault of a mother and her child on Rundle Mall on Sunday afternoon.

The dramatic footage revealed by 7NEWS Adelaide depicts a man hip-and-shoulder the 37-year-old alleged offender Scott Michael Antrobus.

Seconds before the footage was taken, Mr Antrobus allegedly assaulted a 43-year-old mother from North Adelaide in front of her child, sending her to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

It is understood Mr Antrobus was not known to the mother and child.

Following the intervention, scores of bystanders are seen jumping on Mr Antrobus to subdue him before police arrived.

A witness told 7NEWS Adelaide the mother was screaming for help before she was allegedly attacked.

“This lady just started screaming for help and we noticed this guy just running up to her and her daughter and hitting them in the back of the head,” the witness Ebony told 7NEWS.

“I ran up to the lady to make sure she was okay while the rest of the public pinned this guy to the ground.

It comes as Mr Antrobus was due to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on Monday, but due to a shortage of staff he remained in the cells below the court rooms as his hearing was called on.

He is also alleged to have been in possession of an ice pipe.

Mr Antrobus has been charged with one count each of assault, hindering police and refusing to provide his name and address.

His lawyer, Rachel Regester, told the court her client would not be applying for bail and asked for a next date.

Mr Antrobus was remanded in custody to face court again later this month.
