Commissioner Grant Stevens and wife Emma welcome new grandchild named in honour of late son Charlie

Police Commissioner Grant Stevens has talked of the joy of welcoming his new grandchild in the wake of their unimaginable grief – and how her arrival honours his late son Charlie.

South Australia has once again embraced the Stevens family with love, this time in honour of a life cut short and the safe arrival of two bundles of joy.

Police Commissioner Grant Stevens and wife Emma welcomed their second grandchild named in honour after the uncle she will never meet – Charlie Stevens.

Annabelle Charlie Tregloen was born at Ashford Hospital on Wednesday, March 13, with her middle name a nod to the teen killed in an alleged hit run at Goolwa in November.

The Stevens’ niece and cousin Abby Price also welcomed a little boy named Dusty Charles.

Mr Stevens said “it sounds corny” but the family was “overjoyed”.

“Little Annabelle Charlie and little Dusty Charles, they’re great additions to the family,” he said.

“It’s very touching; just not sure these little children understand just what the impact they’ve had on the broader family.

“It’s very positive.”

The sweet news has been welcomed across the state with South Australians sending their well-wishers to the family and new arrivals.

“ … Got a wee bit emotional hearing it. Such a meaningful and beautiful honour both babies have had bestowed upon them,” Anne said on Facebook.

“Beautiful. He will be remembered by these special babies. Some happiness,” wrote Glenda.

“Congratulations Commissioner Stevens and family! Let’s hope little Dusty and Annabelle carry on Charlie’s cheeky legacy and do him proud,” Kelly said.
