Early-morning commuters are being warned of a burst water main at College Park causing traffic problems.

The main broke on Monday afternoon outside the Maid Hotel, flooding part of Payneham Rd and leaving a huge hole.

It is still causing headaches with city-bound traffic down to one lane.

SA Water advised work on the water main would continue through the morning peak traffic times and city-bound commuters should allow extra travel time or expect delays.

Police are asking commuters to avoid the area if they can and consider alternative routes.
