A southern suburbs man who threatened to bring a gun to court just days before he was due to be sentenced for a violent attack on a close friend – an innocent mother – has been jailed for his “abhorrent” crime.

Bradley John Tait, 35, faced the District Court for sentencing on Monday after he caused a woman’s lung to collapse when she was kicked and stomped on in retaliation to her arrival home late – causing him to breach his court-ordered curfew.

Tait had pleaded guilty to one count of recklessly cause serious harm.

Judge Paul Muscat acknowledged Tait’s “extensive” criminal history – including seven different assault charges – and noted the Oaklands Park man had a “tendency to overreact when faced with conflict”.

“Your behaviour is consistent with your inability to manage or control your emotions – particularly in circumstances where you feel aggrieved,” Judge Muscat said.

“It (the attack) was totally unacceptable. Everyone knows that assaulting women is abhorrent, and a very low act.

“In my view, it is beyond doubt that you have major issues controlling or managing your frustration and anger.

“(Your victim) did not deserve that response or reaction from you under any circumstances.”

Last Friday, David Moen, for Tait, told the court a “telling” report that outlined his client’s “escalating behaviour”.

The court also heard the man had threatened to bring a gun to court, and wrote a letter to the court – unbeknown to Mr Moen – which appeared to blame his victim for the attack.

In August, Tait’s victim – through the prosecution – revealed how her attacker was “like a brother” to her.

She wrote he was “someone I thought I could call if there was ever someone like you trying to hurt me or make me feel threatened”.

On Monday, Judge Muscat sentenced Tait – who the court heard had claimed he pushed his victim “in self-defence” – to three years, nine months and nine days imprisonment with a non-parole period of two years and three months.

The sentence was backdated to August 8 last year.
