A father babysitting for a female friend while on parole bashed her unconscious when she arrived home late, a court has heard.

Bradley John Tait, 35, from Oaklands Park, was remanded in custody on Thursday after pleading guilty in June to pushing, kicking and stomping on his female friend after missing curfew.

In the District Court on Thursday, Judge Paul Muscat revoked Tait’s current bail conditions after a victim impact statement was read aloud – detailing the horrific assault that left a defenceless woman fighting for life in hospital.

The court heard Tait needed to be home by 10pm because of his curfew – but when his victim arrived home late, brutally attacked her causing critical injuries.

“You were like a brother to me – someone I thought I could call if there was ever someone like you trying to hurt me or make me feel threatened,” the victim said through the prosecution.

“I understand I upset you – and that you’ve been through things in your life – but to knock me unconscious and then stomp on my body over and over again while I was completely gone is just sick.

“My lung collapsed three times in total. I used to have a big laugh that made others laugh and now I can’t laugh like that at all – I just run out of breath.

“What you did was out of control. You are evil.”

Tait was arrested on August 30 in 2022 after engaging in a heated confrontation with the victim when she returned home late after a night out.

On Thursday, a court heard Tait was babysitting the victim’s children but “overreacted” after missing his parole curfew.

It was further alleged he had a history of violent acts, with Judge Muscat citing Judge Stephen McEwen’s remarks in regard to Tait’s “persistent disregard for court orders and mandates”.

“He has numerous without convictions, bonds and suspended sentences,” Judge Muscat read.

“On my reading, the court’s persistent efforts over the years to extend to the defendant a degree of leniency – and numerous opportunities to rehabilitate himself – have consistently been contemptuously squandered.”

“This is very serious offending. He must have kicked fairly hard for her lung to have collapsed,” Judge Muscat said.

David Moen, for Tait, said his client was a “relatively changed man” since the offending, but was “fairly unedcuated” and overreacted.

“Violence against women is important and should never be committed,” Mr Moen said.

Tait was remanded in custody until sentencing in November.
