The alleged murder of Aaron Stahlhut as he was walking through parklands in North Adelaide on Sunday morning has shocked the community and led the Police Commissioner to urge people to remain vigilant.

What happened?

Mr Everson-Clare can be seen in CCTV footage at 6.18am on Sunday morning taking a sip of coffee while walking away from a park when Mr Stahlhut was later found.

The same camera captured Mr Stahlhut walking in the opposite direction, also with coffee in hand, just seven minutes earlier.

Police found Mr Stahlhut unresponsive in Brougham Gardens, North Adelaide at 7.45am on Sunday following reports he had collapsed on a walking path.

Mr Stahlhut, of Marden, was rushed to hospital, where he died shortly after.

Police late on Sunday arrested Mr Everson-Clare and charged him with the murder of Mr Stahlhut.

He has been remanded in custody under a Section 269X order, meaning his mental health and fitness to plead and stand trial will be assessed.

Following his arrest, Mr Everson-Clare spent three nights in custody in the Royal Adelaide Hospital’s emergency department alongside other patients.

This was due to there being no room at James Nash House, Adelaide’s dedicated mental health facility for alleged criminals, reported 7News Adelaide.

Last year, the Royal Adelaide Hospital’s emergency department was found unsuitable for mental health patients after a review into the care of Shaun Dunk, who allegedly murdered real estate agent Julie Seed and seriously injured her colleague Susan Scardigno.

Mr Everson-Clare was transferred to James Nash House on Thursday afternoon and will next front court in August.

Where did Mr Everson-Clare live?

It is understood Mr Everson-Clare has lived in public housing at various times since 2022, when he was 18 years old.

He moved into a Housing Choices Australia-managed Housing Trust SA home in Walkerville three years ago.

A former neighbour says Mr Everson-Clare was kicked out of the Stephen Tce property in mid-2023.

His most recent home was another HCA-managed Housing Trust property in Margaret St, North Adelaide.

According to neighbours there, Mr Everson-Clare had lived there for about eight months.

They also said the block of six public housing properties was plagued by constant trouble, frequent conflict and “grotty” mess, however residents were mostly friendly.

The properties back onto North Adelaide Primary School.

What schools did Mr Everson-Clare attend?

Mr Everson-Clare attended numerous private schools, including one of the state’s most expensive colleges Westminster School, during his secondary education.

Westminster School principal Simon Shepherd sent an email to parents and caregivers on Monday confirming Mr Everson-Clare was a former student of the school.

Mr Shepherd said Westminster School was a “community-minded school “ which always aimed to “help young people in difficult situations”.

“Midway through 2018, we took this student into Year 8 to help provide him with a sense of stability as he understood secondary education,” he wrote.

“He left us at the end of 2019 in Year 9 to apparently continue his education in the Barossa Valley.

“We will continue to help and support out students. Should this incident and its reporting cause any distress or concerns for your child, please do not hesitate to make use of the Pastoral Care team at school.”

It is understood Mr Everson-Clare attended Faith Lutheran College in Tanunda after he left Westminster.

Meanwhile, St Patrick’s Technical College – a Catholic high school in Elizabeth – has confirmed Mr Everson-Clare was one of its Year 11 students in 2021.

He was “transitioned” out of the northern suburbs private school and into the workforce after concerns were raised over his wellbeing.

What has the Police Commissioner said?

Police Commissioner Grant Stevens acknowledged the alleged murder could “impact on people’s sense of safety” in the parklands.

However, he urged people to “keep this in context”.

“It’s inevitable that there will be incidents where strangers are confronted by people who cause them harm,” Mr Stevens said.

“(But) the vast majority of people who are harmed by others find this occurring in a domestic relationship.”

He said people should “have some level of self awareness in relation to your own personal safety”.
