Senior Sergeant Angelique Maloney’s family legacy in Queensland Police Service

This Gold Coast mum always knew she wanted to be a police officer, and now her sons are too. Meet the matriarch whose work on the job and at home is vital to our police frontline.

While some lucky mums will be waking up to breakfast in bed on Sunday, this Gold Coast matriarch will avoid crumbs under the duvet all together by going to work.

Luckily for her, Senior Sergeant Angelique Maloney is a police officer who loves her job keeping the community safe — part of a family tradition of policing.

She’s also raised the next generation of our vital frontline workforce.

“Both my sons work for the (Queensland Police Service), their dad and stepdad … my niece has just been sworn in to New South Wales police, and I have two cousins in the police as well,” Ms Maloney said.

“It’s all I can remember ever wanting to be.”

Her sons Josh Munckton, 21, and Matt Munckton, 25, are both constables with QPS, working in Townsville and Mt Isa respectively.

With Ms Maloney rostered on a 6am to 3pm shift on Sunday and her children spread across the state, the family won’t spend Mother’s Day together this year.

“They’ll Facetime me during the day,” she said.

She said both boys called her a lot — when they had good days and when they had bad days — and she hoped they might work together on the Gold Coast in the future.

“I would absolutely love to work with them,” she said.

“They would probably be embarrassed to work with their elderly mother,” she laughed.

Both of Ms Maloney’s children are on the QPS footy team, which is set to play on the Gold Coast in July, so she looks forward to seeing them then.

“I always hoped they would (join the police service), but I didn’t originally think they were going to,” she said.

She was part of the official proceedings when both boys joined the force, signing Matt’s form at his swearing in and as the table officer for Josh.

“I just think it’s a great job,” she said.
