As Robert Bickerton took a walk along the Daly River one evening after his shift as a remote area nurse he said he could “smell something in the water”.

“But that something expired by the time I took the photo,” the 46-year-old said.

Mr Bickerton happened to capture a baby buffalo on film in the process of being caught, ripped to pieces and partially eaten by a crocodile in the river.

“I came across this spectacle on my afternoon walk, it would have been about 6pm,” he said.

“I went down to the riverbank and it was pretty much right in front of me.

“I saw the croc with what looked like a juvenile buffalo.

“The croc was trying to drag it to the bank.”

Mr Bickerton said he watched the crocodile struggle with the baby buffalo for about 30 minutes.

“It was trying to rip bits off of it,” he said.

“Eventually the river current took hold and the croc lost its grip.”

Mr Bickerton said the Daly River was full of crocodiles and he would sometimes see them in the evenings around sunset but this “was the first time I’ve seen that”.

The Karama local has worked as a remote area nurse all over the Top End and a few years ago was stationed out at Daly River.

“No one in their right mind would go in that river,” he said.

“Bit risky even walking down to the bank.

“But it was too good an opportunity to miss.”

The photos, taken from approximately 20m away, certainly attest to that.”
