Warwick Cowboys community rallies around teammate’s son diagnosed with rare spinal tumour
The parents of a two-year-old Warwick boy who suddenly lost his ability to walk have been overwhelmed by their community's response. Here’s how you can help out.
The Warwick rugby league community has rallied around one of its teammate’s whose young son has been diagnosed with a rare and complex spinal tumour.
Having only welcomed their third child into the world last month, the unexpected diagnosis of their two-year-old son Elijah is something no family can be prepared for.
Elijah’s aunt, Nikki Masterman has started a fundraiser to help her sister Lexi and her partner Dylan through this difficult time.
Ms Masterman said the family began to notice changes in Elijah’s movement, with the young boy finding himself unable to walk or stand.
“We found out last week that it was a spinal cord tumour and he was admitted to hospital straight away,” she said.
His first surgery on Monday was able to remove the majority of the tumour, which will be tested to determine the best course of action moving forward.
Ms Masterman said doctors were planning to do another MRI on Wednesday to see how things are looking post-surgery.
The family has been left overwhelmed and extremely grateful for the community support, with the fundraiser having reached more than $30,000 in a matter of days.
