Candice Maria Baverstock pleads guilty to high-range drink driving in Warwick Magistrates Court
A mother-of-three told a Warwick magistrate her decision to get behind the wheel while highly intoxicated set a ‘poor example’ for her children.
An accumulation of loss and heartbreak saw a Warwick mother turn to alcohol to cope with the pain, with her decision to get behind the wheel while heavily intoxicated providing an unfortunate wake-up call.
Candice Maria Baverstock was lucky to escape with minor injuries after crashing her Ford Everest into a power pole on Albion street just after midnight on July 17.
She pleaded guilty to one count of driving under the influence of liquor in Warwick Magistrates Court on November 3.
The court was told police were called to reports of a single-vehicle crash where they located Baverstock, who was taken to hospital to provide a blood alcohol sample.
Police prosecutor sergeant Steve de Lissa told the court Baverstock returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.20.
Self-represented, Baverstock told the court she took full responsibility for her actions and was left very embarrassed and humiliated.
“I reiterate that I’m very ashamed of my behaviour and realise I’m a poor example to my three children,” she said.
Due to the nature of the crash, Baverstock told the court her insurance won’t cover the payout leaving her to continue the vehicle’s repayments, which has caused significant financial stress.
Magistrate Janice Crawford reduced the disqualification period to six-months and fined Baverstock $1000.
A conviction was recorded.
