An event at Woodwark this weekend invites residents of the high-risk bushfire area to arm themselves with information that could prove lifesaving.

A new Community Bushfire Plan will be the focus of an information session this Sunday at Northerlies Bar and Restaurant, with Airlie Beach Fire and Rescue and Rural Fire Service crews available from noon to 2pm to answer questions and share expert advice.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services worked closely with Whitsunday Regional Council, Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service and the Queensland Department of Resource Management to develop the plan for the Woodwark community.

Authorities have assessed upland areas north of Woodwark as having high bushfire hazard, and land with eucalypt woodland and open forest as a medium to high bushfire hazard.

The plan states that the proximity of the eucalypt woodland to residential properties in the Woodwark area “presents a high risk to residential dwellings and infrastructure”.
