A “huge” parking issue in Airlie Beach has prompted a Whitsunday councillor to urge council staff to take action and prevent a life being lost.

Division 1 councillor Jan Clifford asked for an update on the installation of no-standing signs and yellow line markings on Broadwater Ave at the most recent council meeting.

Cr Clifford labelled the current situation “dangerous” as cars parked on the road were overcrowding the narrow stretch.

She was concerned about the stretch between Coral Sea Marina and the Broadwater car park.

“Councillor (Al) Grundy and I drove around there … I had to cross the double white lines because of cars parked there with trailers hanging out,” Cr Clifford said.

“This is a matter of public safety, someone is going to get killed.

“There are buses going around there, I’ve asked, I’ve asked, I’ve asked and I really need it done.”

Council’s infrastructure services director Matt Fanning said the regular process was to take road matters to the traffic advisory committee and it was flagged as an issue for an upcoming meeting.

But Cr Clifford said she did not need a “300-page report”, the work needed to be done.

“The argument is everyone is saying there’s no signage,” she said.

“It’s a huge issue and I would really love it resolved.”

Mayor Andrew Willcox said he believed the advisory committee gave advice but did not make decisions, and there had not been a committee meeting in the 11 months since the new council was elected.

Cr Clifford worded a motion and councillors voted to have no-standing signs and yellow line-marking placed on Broadwater Ave between Coral Sea Marina Resort and Broadwater car park on the seaward side, as a matter of urgency.

Division 2 Al Grundy said he backed the motion.

“I certainly support it from the safety aspect,” he said.

Mr Fanning confirmed the motion was doable as it was preventing some parking.

Council’s community services director Julie Wright told the councillors assembled for the meeting officers were patrolling the area to hand out fines.

“The operator down there is looking at some parking permits down in Broadwater,” she said.

“Then anybody who is casually parking and attending the Sunday afternoon sessions in the area, there is plenty of parking at Broadwater car park.”

Councillors voted unanimously in favour of installing the signage and line markings.
