Proserpine siblings to shave heads, donate hair for cancer charity

Five Whitsunday siblings are counting on the community’s support in their campaign to stamp out an all-too-common killer.

Whitsunday Times how to roadshow

A Whitsunday family that has seen the devastating impacts of cancer too many times is saying enough is enough and taking a stand to find a cure.

The five young Colling siblings, of Proserpine, have all committed to shave their heads to raise funds for research into the deadly disease and to improve quality of life for those currently suffering.

Their proud mum Proserpine State High School teacher Kel Colling said the kids, aged between 5 and 15, had seen multiple friends and relatives suffer debilitating effects of various forms of cancer, including a cousin who was born with retinoblastoma – eye cancer – and lost his eye after his first birthday.

“Our family has a history of cancer,” Ms Colling said.

“Their great grandfather passed from prostate cancer and their grandfather and great uncles have prostate cancer.

“I also lost my best friend to breast cancer last year.”

The kids have coloured their hair in past years of the World’s Greatest Shave, but this time around wanted to do more.

They decided sacrificing their hair was a small price to pay to help prevent future deaths, and the two girls, Indiana and River, are delighted to donate their long locks to be made into wigs for patients who have lost hair as a result of chemotherapy.

“My eldest son is autistic and it was his idea and once he sets his mind to something, he stops at nothing to do it,” Ms Colling said.

The siblings will wait until March next year to go under the clippers, but they are already in full swing with their fundraising efforts.
