The annual Proserpine Show Ball makes its much-anticipated comeback this weekend and it is already a sold-out success.

The not-for-profit community event is back on Saturday, May 15, for the first time in 25 years, and organisers have had no trouble selling 500 tickets to punters keen for night of unforgettable entertainment.

The black-tie event is a fundraiser for the Proserpine Show Society, which, like many businesses and community groups, took a significant financial hit during the COVID-19 crisis.

Proceeds will go to refurbishing ageing infrastructure at the Proserpine showgrounds for the annual agricultural show, as well as the numerous other events that use the grounds.

Committee member Meghan Wilson said the annual show ball and harvest festival were once some of the most talked about events on the area’s social calendar.

She was thrilled to be able to help bring the community an event to look forward to, after a year of scarce social opportunities

“I just think it’s going to be great for the community. It used to be a massive event so it’s great to be bringing it back after such a negative year where we haven’t had much to look forward to.”

As well as providing a great excuse to dress up and have a dance, Ms Wilson said the ball would be an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the vital role of agriculture in the Whitsunday community, and ensure the continuation of the annual show for many years to come.

“The agricultural industry is essentially the reason why we live in such a prosperous area,” she said.

“These events are all about engaging and teaching the current and future generations about the contribution of farming as well as showing where our food comes from.”

The Show Ball kicks off at the Proserpine showgrounds this Saturday at 6pm.

The night will include entertainment from local singer Jake Mason and Tamworth’s Jarrod Taylor Band, as well as a raffle, and finger food from The Family Pantry.

Drinks will be available at the bar until 11.30pm.
