Airlie Beach short-term accommodation: New units planned for Mount Whitsunday Drive

Developers say new multi-storey short-term accommodation units overlooking Airlie Beach will result in a ‘small scale low key facility in a unique location’. SEE THE PLANS

Queensland tourism businesses 'going broke' due to uncertainty

Airlie Beach residents are invited to have their say on a proposal to build short-term accommodation units on vacant land overlooking the town.

Jumbo Properties’ plan to develop eight villas plus a manager’s residence and restaurant at 18-24 Mount Whitsunday Drive went on public notification in November 2021, with community members encouraged to share their views with Whitsunday Regional Council before it decides the application.

The proposal includes six two-storey villas, one one-storey villa, one three-storey communal building, a two-storey manager’s villa and 13 car spaces, with none of the buildings exceeding 12 metres in height.

The 2130sq m development site is zoned low medium density residential and is subject to bushfire and landslide hazard overlays.

The vacant site is within walking distance to town and adjoins a large resort development downslope to the north, Wyndham Resort, with a smaller multi-unit development uphill to the south.

Documents submitted to the council state the proposed restaurant and bar would service in-house guests as well as the “immediate surrounds”, and that the short-accommodation would contain a management plan “for ensuring the amenity of the area is not compromised”.

They further state the accommodation has been designed to work within the environment and “will not impact on the natural environmental values of the area”.

The proposal follows recent controversy over an increase in short-term accommodation in Whitsundays’ residential areas, which prompted the council to consider a moratorium on applications and the creation of a dedicated ‘Party Zone’ for potentially unruly groups of guests.
