A Gold Coast woman holidaying in the Whitsundays has been flown to hospital with serious facial injuries after a buggy incident on a popular tropical island.

It comes almost 12 months after a new bride was killed in a golf buggy incident on her honeymoon on the island.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the single vehicle crash in the early hours on Thursday, May 11 on Hamilton Island involving a number of people aged 18 to 21.

It is understood several people were on a 2014 E-Z-GO golf buggy travelling on a driveway on Acacia Dr when it crashed and a 21-year-old Willow Vale woman has fallen and struck her head.

As a result RACQ CQ Rescue was called and the woman was flown to Mackay Base Hospital with serious but non-life threatening facial injuries including multiple fractures.

Attempts by an off-duty firefighter, a doctor and dentist to save her were unsuccessful.
