A young stock contractor caught carrying weed in a Woolies bag has been warned about all the drug-pushing “derros” she will encounter if she chooses to stay in the Whitsunday region.

Daughter of two-time Australian bull riding champion Darren Brandenburg, Dakota Lillyman Brandenburg faced Proserpine Magistrates Court this week after police conducting speed enforcement on the Bruce Highway searched her car and found a Woolworths carry bag containing 23 grams of marijuana and a used water pipe made from a Gatorade bottle.

The court heard police stopped the 25-year-old Brandenburg Bucking Bulls merchandise rep south of Bowen about 3.30pm on October 23 while conducting speed enforcement and searched the car because it smelt strongly of marijuana.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Emma Myors said Brandenburg told officers at the scene she had obtained the drugs from a friend for personal use, but later declined to participate in an interview at Bowen Police Station.

Brandenburg pleaded guilty to possessing dangerous drugs, possessing a drug utensil that had been used, and possessing property suspected of having been used in connection with the commission of a drug offence.

Defence lawyer Peta Vernon told the court her client originated from Richmond, Queensland, but moved to the Whitsundays about two years ago when her family found it a good base from which to ride the rodeo circuit with their bucking bulls business.

Ms Vernon emphasised that Brandenburg had no criminal history and that the drugs were for personal use.

Magistrate James Morton sentenced Brandenburg to a 12-month $600 good behaviour bond, ordered the forfeiture of the seized items, and ordered that she complete a drug and alcohol course by December 17, 2021.

Before letting her go, Mr Morton asked Brandenburg if she intended to stay in the Whitsundays long-term.

When she said yes, he told her: “Let me be very clear with you, there’s a lot of derros here.
“They sell drugs, push drugs, and they are drug users.”

No convictions were recorded.
