On a Monday in early February, at around midday a fire started that would grow to destroy a family’s home and countless precious memories.

The two storey house, located on the Roma Peak Rd in Bowen, belonged to Janette and Vinnie Maddern, who were out of the house and safe by the time the first crews arrived at 12:30pm.

Firefighters witnessed “thick, black, smoke” pouring out of the building.

The fire, which started in the downstairs of the house, would not be extinguished until 2pm and left the home in a state of ruin.

While Janette and Vinnie were uninjured, their daughter Nicole says they “lost everything”.

Nicole Maddern, who has set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for her parents said, “they are still coming to terms with the loss”.

Nicole writes that the account is intended to help raise “much needed” funds to rebuild their home and buy household essentials.

So far the fund, titled “help mum rebuild her life xo” has raised $1,900 from nine donors, out of a $10,000 goal.

“Dig deep and support them by donating today,” Nicole implored.
