A development approval for a huge project at Funnel Bay has been given an 18-month extension.
Whitsunday councillors unanimously voted to extend the approval at last week’s council meeting.
A recommendation was brought to the table to approve the request made by Wynne Planning and Development on behalf of Funnel Bay Pty Ltd to grant the extension to May 14, 2022.
The huge development, earmarked for Langford Rd at Flametree, includes an eco-tourism resort precinct with 172 accommodation units, hotel, a function centre, chapel, restaurants and shops.

Council documents state the applicant has taken “significant steps” to complete the development, with multiple development permits obtained and some works started and finished.
“Based on the applicant’s representations and the completed site civil works, the development will likely proceed should an additional 18-month extension be granted,” the documents state.
“On this basis, the request is recommended for approval.”
The council originally granted preliminary approval for the Funnel Bay development back in November 2006, subject to conditions.
Various alterations were made to the development approval between 2016 and 2018.
In June 2018, the council extended the approval to November last year and so in October of last year, developers asked for that period to be extended again.
Council agenda documents note the developer has received multiple development approvals related to the project, including recently receiving approval for a hotel, 140 accommodation units and indoor entertainment.
“Furthermore, significant site works have been undertaken in order to deliver the operational works components of the development,” documents state.
“It is therefore considered the applicant has continued to remain active with the development and is working towards the finalisation of the project.”
