Dead cattle after truck crash off Bruce Highway, near Bowen

North Queensland firefighters have ‘cleared up’ dead cattle off the region’s main highway following a horror night time traffic crash involving a semi trailer. The transport company says ‘multiple cattle’ were on the road when the collision occured.

A Mackay transport company has confirmed one of their semi trailers collided with a herd of cattle, in a horror crash near Bowen overnight.

Local fireys had to ‘clear up’ dead cattle off the Bruce Highway after the collison occured at Guthalungra, 60km south of Bowen after 3am.

A Lindsay Australia Transport spokesman said one of their drivers had collided with the cattle as they were standing on the road.

“We didn’t go off the road and hit them,” the spokesman said adding that there had been “multiple cattle” heads in the way.

“After the collison, the driver was able to steer to the left hand side of the road.”

The spokesman said the driver had not been injured in the incident but the front of the truck was wrecked, and it had to be towed away.

Emergency services were called to an incident with cattle at a remote locality approximately 60km north of Bowen overnight.

Police officers and firefighters attended a traffic crash where a truck had crashed into a herd of cattle on the Bruce Highway at Guthalungra after 3am.

Officers initially closed the highway off to assess the damage.

A Queensland Police Service spokesman said the truck driver had not been injured in the incident but a number of cattle had died in the crash.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Service spokesman said firefighters had helped clear dead cattle off the road and had not left the scene until 5:50am.

It is not clear how many cattle have died.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said the truck driver had declined the offer to the transported to hospital.

She said QAS were not given any information on the cattle.

The Bruce Highway has reopened this morning at 6:45am.
